    Comments

The painters Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and Édouard Manet (1832-1883) had a close but turbulent relationship. At times, the friends were rivals, at others even opponents. What they had in common was their passionate influence on the development of modern painting in France. The present portrait can be seen as a tribute to their friendship. Reed/Shapiro know of six copies of the present work, five of which are in museum collections.
