On the original stretcher, with the old nailing. With minimal craquelure in places, slightly rubbed through the frame at the edge of the image. In very good condition

Comments

The large-format work shows Lake Geneva near Saint-Gingolph at the northern foot of the Grammont, which is part of the Chablais massif in the Savoy Alps. The painting was a commission for M. Revel, a dealer in St. Petersburg, as the label still on the stretcher bearing the handwriting of Alexandre Calame attests: "Effet de soleil. Peint en 1851 / pour Mon. Revel. / Genève 1 Mars 1851 / A Calame / largeur 1 mètre 40 centimètres / hauteur 1 mètre." A lithograph of the subject of the painting was printed with the inscription "A Saint-Gingolph (Lac de Genève)" and the note "Appartient à M. Revel". As Calame aptly described it on the label with "Effet de soleil", he has captured the effect of the sun very beautifully in the picture.

Erläuterungen

Das grossformatige Werk zeigt den Genfersee bei Saint-Gingolph am Nordfuss des Grammonts, der zum Chablais-Massiv in den Savoyer Alpen gehört. Das Gemälde war eine Auftragsarbeit für M. Revel, einem Händler in St. Petersburg, wie das noch auf dem Keilrahmen vorhandene Etikett mit der Handschrift von Alexandre Calame bezeugt: "Effet de soleil. Peint en 1851 / pour Mon. Revel. / Genève 1. Mars 1851 / A Calame / largeur 1 mètre 40 centimètres / hauteur 1 mètre." Von dem Sujet des Gemäldes wurde eine Lithographie mit der Bezeichnung "A Saint-Gingolph (Lac de Genève)" und dem Vermerk "Appartient à M. Revel" gedruckt. Wie Calame es auf dem Etikett mit "Effet de soleil" treffend beschrieb, hat er den Sonneneffekt im Bild sehr schön eingefangen.
