Heckel’s most important self-portrait from the artist's graphic oeuvre was probably created in Berlin at the end of 1918, shortly after the artist's return from the war. Dube gives "1919" as the year of origin, but there are individual early prints dated "1918", such as the copy in the former Gustav Schiefler Collection in Hamburg, cf. Auktion Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, 22-24 June 1983, lot 300, or probably also the present sheet, which is marked "Probe / Eigendruck".

The woodcut was printed with the drawing in black and three tone plates coloured with a brush in ochre, green and blue. An important document from Heckel's graphic oeuvre.

Erläuterungen

Das bedeutendste Selbstbildnis aus dem graphischen Werk des Künstlers ist wahrscheinlich Ende 1918, kurz nach der Rückkehr des Künstlers aus dem Krieg, in Berlin entstanden. Bei Dube wird "1919" als Entstehungsjahr angegeben, aber es gibt einzelne mit "1918" datierte Frühdrucke, so z. B. das Exemplar der ehem. Sammlung Gustav Schiefler in Hamburg, vgl. Auktion Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, 22.-24. Juni 1983, Los 300, oder wohl auch das vorliegende Blatt, das mit "Probe / Eigendruck" bezeichnet ist.

Gedruckt wurde der Holzschnitt mit der Zeichnung in Schwarz und drei mit dem Pinsel eingefärbten Tonplatten in Ocker, Grün und Blau. Ein wichtiges Dokument aus Heckels graphischem Œuvre.
