From 1986 onwards, Franz Gertsch abandoned his photorealistic painting for several years in favour of an intensive preoccupation with the medium of woodcut. He found the models for his portraits in his immediate surroundings; according to the catalogue "Franz Gertsch - Retrospektive" from 2005/2006, the large-format woodcut offered here is Doris Jaenni, whom Gertsch had photographed as a twenty-year-old in Balthasar Burkhard's studio.

The plate was cleaned and recoloured before each print. Each print was printed by hand in collaboration with Nik Hausmann, always with a different colour and printing intensity, so that the prints are in fact unique. The editions were always very small. "Doris" was printed from three limewood blocks in an edition of only 18 prints and 7 artist's proofs and 18 further prints/proofs with the drawing block in various colours on Kumohadamashi Japanese paper by Heizaburo Iwano. There were also a few proofs. The present print is in a soft blue colour. According to the artist's print book, the following colours were used: lapis lazuli, some water colour (Kyoto) and ultramarine blue.

Gertsch is regarded as a great innovator of the woodcut. "Doris" is a very idiosyncratic, almost mysterious woodcut, a wonderful portrait with great radiance.

Erläuterungen

Ab 1986 gab Franz Gertsch seine fotorealistische Malerei für einige Jahre zugunsten einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit dem Medium Holzschnitt auf. Die Modelle für seine Porträts fand er in seiner nächsten Umgebung; beim hier angebotenen, grossformatigen Holzschnitt handelt es sich gemäss Katalog "Franz Gertsch - Retrospektive" von 2005/2006 um Doris Jaenni, die Gertsch als Zwanzigjährige im Atelier von Balthasar Burkhard fotografiert hatte.

Vor jedem Handabzug wurde die Platte gereinigt und neu eingefärbt. Jeder Druck wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Nik Hausmann von Hand abgezogen, immer mit unterschiedlicher Farbgebung und Druckintensität, sodass es sich bei den Abzügen faktisch um Unikate handelt. Es entstanden stets kleine Auflagen. "Doris" wurde von drei Lindenholzplatten in einer Auflage von lediglich 18 Abzügen und 7 Künstlerabzügen und 18 weiteren Drucken/Probedrucken mit dem Zeichnungsstock in verschiedenen Farben auf Kumohadamashi-Japanpapier von Heizaburo Iwano gedruckt. Dazu kamen noch wenige Probedrucke. Der vorliegende Abzug ist in einem weichen Blau gehalten. Verwendet wurden gemäss Druckbuch des Künstlers folgende Farben: Lapislazuli, etwas Farbe des Wassers (Kyoto) und Ultramarinblau.

Gertsch gilt als grosser Erneuerer des Holzschnitts. "Doris" ist ein sehr eigenwilliger, fast geheimnisvoller Holzschnitt, ein wunderbares Porträt mit grosser Strahlkraft.
