The theme of the circus is one of the constant and most important motifs in Marc Chagall's oeuvre. His fascination goes back to his childhood, when he saw travelling troupes perform on the village square in Vitebsk. For him, the circus was a "metaphor of life" and in 1967 he wrote in "Le Cirque": "J'ai toujours considéré les clowns, les acrobates et les acteurs comme des êtres tragiquement humains qui ressembleraient, pour moi, aux personnages de certaines peintures religieuses" (I have always regarded clowns, acrobats and actors as tragically human beings who, for me, resembled the figures in certain religious paintings).

Ambroise Vollard, himself a great friend of the circus, inspired Chagall to realise this complex theme in a series of prints. Chagall created 19 preparatory gouaches, but the joint Bible project probably led to the interruption of work on the circus. After Vollard's death, Tériade persuaded the artist to complete the large work.

Chagall spent almost 30 years working on the idea of publishing his text "Cirque" with his own illustrations. In collaboration with the publisher Tériade, this work was realised between 1965 and 1967 and published in 1967. Chagall created 23 colour lithographs for the book, 3 of which are double-sided, as well as 15 lithographs in black. In addition to the book edition, a separate suite of the 23 colour lithographs was printed with a wide paper margin in a very small edition of only 24 copies. Each sheet in this suite is individually signed and numbered. "Cirque" is undoubtedly one of the most important and personal of all Chagall's illustrated books. The lithographs are exceptionally colourful and painterly, and the harmony of text and illustration is astonishing. A complete suite of "Cirque" with uniform numbering is extremely rare.

Das Thema "Zirkus" gehört zu den konstanten und wichtigsten Motiven in Marc Chagalls Œuvre. Die Faszination geht auf seine Kindheit zurück, als er auf dem Dorfplatz in Witebsk Wandertruppen auftreten sah. Für ihn war der Zirkus eine "Metapher des Lebens" und er schrieb 1967 in "Le Cirque": "J'ai toujours considéré les clowns, les acrobates et les acteurs comme des êtres tragiquement humains qui ressembleraient, pour moi, aux personnages de certaines peintures religieuses" (Ich habe Clowns, Akrobaten und Schauspieler immer als tragisch menschliche Wesen betrachtet, die für mich den Figuren in gewissen religiösen Gemälden ähnelten).

Ambroise Vollard, selbst ein grosser Freund des Zirkus, regte Chagall dazu an, das vielschichtige Thema in einer druckgraphischen Folge umzusetzen. Chagall schuf dazu 19 vorbereitende Gouachen, doch das gemeinsame Bibel-Projekt führte wohl schliesslich zur Unterbrechung der Arbeit am Zirkus. Tériade überredete den Künstler nach Vollards Tod, das grosse Werk zu vollenden.

Chagall beschäftigte sich während nahezu 30 Jahren mit der Idee der Herausgabe seines Textes "Cirque" mit eigenen Illustrationen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Verleger Tériade wurde dieses Werk in den Jahren von 1965 bis 1967 realisiert und 1967 herausgegeben. Es entstanden für das Buch 23 Farblithographien, davon 3 doppelseitige, sowie 15 Lithographien in Schwarz. Von den 23 Farblithographien wurde neben der Buchauflage eine separate Suite mit breitem Papierrand in der sehr kleinen Auflage von nur 24 Exemplaren gedruckt. Bei dieser Suite sind alle Blätter einzeln signiert und nummeriert. "Cirque" gehört zweifellos zu den bedeutendsten und persönlichsten aller illustrierten Bücher von Chagall. Die Lithographien sind aussergewöhnlich farbintensiv und malerisch umgesetzt, die Harmonie von Text und Illustrationskunst verblüffen. Eine komplette Suite von "Cirque" mit einheitlicher Nummerierung ist von extremer Seltenheit.
