Comments

Eduardo Chillida repeatedly worked on monumental sculptures and installations. Probably the most famous of these is the impressive work "Peine del viento XV" (Wind Crest), which is integrated into the Basque landscape near San Sebastián. This three-part steel sculpture is located at the end of the bay of La Concha in Donostia-San Sebastián. It is a sculptural structure made up of three parts, each weighing ten tonnes. Chillida worked with the architect Luis Peña Ganchegui to design the surroundings with its terraces of pale pink granite. The steel colossi are embedded in the rocks above the water and are even washed around by higher waves. You can literally feel the force of the Cantabrian Sea - a true spectacle of the forces of nature. A pipe system is embedded in the granite, through which the air driven by the waves is blown out. On days with high waves, the spectacle is even more impressive, as the resulting sounds are accompanied by finely atomised water. Fourteen forged preparatory works of various sizes were created with the large installation by the sea in mind.

According to the catalogue raisonné, the sculpture offered here is the one that best sums up the three monumental sculptures by the sea. Composed of two parts, the work forms a marvellous ensemble with its filigree forms and the "grounded" base.

Erläuterungen

Eduardo Chillida arbeitete immer wieder an monumentalen Plastiken und Installationen. Die wohl berühmteste ist die eindrucksvolle, in die baskische Landschaft bei San Sebastián eingepasste Arbeit "Peine del viento XV" (Windkamm). Die dreiteilige Stahlplastik steht am Ende der Bucht La Concha in Donostia-San Sebastián. Es handelt sich um ein Skulpturengefüge, das sich aus drei jeweils zehn Tonnen schweren Teilen zusammensetzt. Für die Umgebungsgestaltung mit den leicht rosafarbigen Granitterrassen arbeitete Chillida mit dem Architekten Luis Peña Ganchegui zusammen. Die Stahlkolosse wurden in den Felsen über dem Wasser eingelassen und werden von höheren Wellen sogar umspült. Man kann so die Wucht des kantabrischen Meeres förmlich spüren – ein wahrhaftiges Schauspiel der Naturgewalten. Im Granit ist ein Rohrsystem eingelassen, durch das die von den Wellen angetriebene Luft ausgeblasen wird. An Tagen mit hohem Wellengang ist das Spektakel noch beeindruckender, werden die so entstehenden Klänge doch zusätzlich von fein zerstäubtem Wasser begleitet. Im Hinblick auf die grosse Installation am Meer entstanden vierzehn geschmiedete Vorarbeiten unterschiedlicher Grösse.

Gemäss Werkverzeichnis ist die hier angebotene Plastik diejenige, die die drei Monumentalplastiken am Meer am besten aufgreift und zusammenfasst. Die aus zwei Teilen zusammengesetzte Arbeit bildet mit den filigranen Formen und dem "geerdeten" Sockel ein wunderbares Ensemble.
