From 18 July to 22 August 1959, Galerie Klipstein & Kornfeld in Bern held a highly acclaimed summer exhibition of works by Alberto Giacometti. As part of the exhibition, Eberhard W. Kornfeld acquired three of the plaster casts on display, which he had cast in bronze in collaboration with Giacometti at Mario Pastori in Geneva from 1960 onwards.

The contrast developed in the miniature sculptures between the small head and the massive plinth also creates a unique tension in the portraits of the 1950s. The massive, self-contained torso lends security and weight to the narrow frontal view of the face. The early idea of flattening the head, tried and tested in painting and drawing, led him to focus on the decisive features of the person portrayed. In the bronze offered here, it is once again his brother Diego who modelled. "D'après nature" means that the present sculpture was created during a portrait session, which was not always the case later on. Diego is wearing a turtleneck jumper, which formally brings the sculpture close to 16th/17th century portrait painting. The bust has a very classical composition; the features of his brother are meticulously worked out. The flattening of the sides of the head results in a lively frontal view of the face: the profile shows the same and yet completely different Diego.

"Buste de Diego d'après nature" was shown as a plaster in Kornfeld's summer exhibition in 1959. From 1960, the bronzes were created at Pastori in Geneva; the edition totalled eight casts (0/6-6/6 and E 1). Giacometti expressly commented on the desired patina: the one for the sculpture offered here was deliberately intended to be rather light in colour. As the editions were often only cast after they had been sold, the last examples were not produced until 1967, shortly after the artist's death. However, even these casts still correspond to Giacometti's exact ideas. Kornfeld ultimately kept the number "E 1", the copy for the publisher, in his own collection.

Vom 18. Juli bis 22. August 1959 fand in der Galerie Klipstein & Kornfeld in Bern eine viel beachtete Sommerausstellung mit Werken von Alberto Giacometti statt. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung übernahm Eberhard W. Kornfeld drei der gezeigten Gipse, die er ab 1960 in Zusammenarbeit mit Giacometti bei Mario Pastori in Genf in Bronze giessen liess.

Der in den Miniaturplastiken entwickelte Kontrast von kleinem Kopf mit massivem Sockel erzeugt auch in den Porträts der 1950er Jahre eine einzigartige Spannung. Der massige, in sich geschlossene Torso gibt der schmalen Frontansicht des Gesichts Sicherheit und Gewicht. Die frühe, in der Malerei und Zeichnung erprobte Idee einer Abflachung des Kopfes führte zu einer Fokussierung auf die entscheidenden Wesenszüge der porträtierten Person. In der hier angebotenen Bronze ist es einmal mehr sein Bruder Diego, der Modell sass. "D’après nature" will sagen, dass die vorliegende Plastik im Rahmen einer Porträtsitzung entstanden ist, was später nicht mehr immer der Fall war. Diego trägt einen Rollkragenpullover, was die Plastik formal in die Nähe der Porträtmalerei des 16./17. Jahrhunderts bringt. Die Büste wirkt sehr klassisch in der Komposition; minutiös sind die Merkmale seines Bruders herausgearbeitet. Die seitliche Abflachung des Kopfes führt zur Belebung der Vorderansicht des Gesichts: Das Profil zeigt so den gleichen und doch ganz anderen Diego.

"Buste de Diego d'après nature" war als Gips in Kornfelds Sommerausstellung 1959 zu sehen. Ab 1960 entstanden bei Pastori in Genf die Bronzen; die Edition betrug acht Güsse (0/6-6/6 und E 1). Giacometti hat sich ausdrücklich zur gewünschten Patina geäussert: Die für die hier angebotene Plastik sollte bewusst eher hell sein. Da die Editionen oft erst nach erfolgtem Verkauf gegossen wurden, entstanden die letzten Exemplare erst 1967, also kurz nach dem Tod des Künstlers. Doch auch diese Güsse entsprechen noch den genauen Vorstellungen Giacomettis. Kornfeld behielt die Nummer "E 1", das Exemplar für den Verleger, schliesslich in seiner eigenen Sammlung.
