Ferdinand Sommer was active in Thun from 1855 and became grand master of the so-called Thun School of Vedute. As such, he produced numerous paintings of the Swiss mountains, which he sold to the first tourists to the Alps. From 1868 to 1871 he had Ferdinand Hodler as an apprentice, whereby the latter initially had to do flat-painting work, namely shop signs.

Ferdinand Sommer war ab 1855 in Thun tätig und wurde Grossmeister der sog. Thuner Vedutenschule. Als solcher fertigte er zahlreiche Gemälde der Schweizer Berge, die er an die ersten Touristen der Alpen verkaufte. Von 1868 bis 1871 hatte er Ferdinand Hodler als Lehrling, wobei dieser anfangs Flachmalerarbeiten, namentlich Ladenschilder, verrichten musste
