On an old stretcher, in an old nailing, additionally fixed with staples. In the upper left corner with minimal craquelure. In very good condition and fresh in colour
In the spring of 1903, Félix Vallotton moved with his family to the 16th arrondissement and settled at 59 rue des Belles-Feuilles, on the corner of rue Mérimée, in a townhouse that had recently given way to a new building. The house consisted of two wings arranged at right angles to each other with a small garden: One contained the dining room on the ground floor and the bedrooms upstairs, the other the salon, above which Vallotton had his studio built and which could be reached by a spiral staircase (Ducrey 488).
In the present painting, Vallotton captures the view from his bedroom window over the "Quartier de la Porte-Dauphine" in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. The work was titled after the street name "Rue des Belles-Feuilles" because part of the street ran along a park wall over which the leaves of the trees were blown. Today, the park has also given way to the urbanisation measures of the city. The painting belongs to a group of only five very personal works from 1903, in which the artist shows the viewer his new place of residence (Ducrey 450-452, 476-477).
