    Comments

The majority of Louis Soutter's works are in black and white. During the period of finger painting, he produced rare coloured works in oil and gouache such as "Le très haut parleur à la lune". However, he was less concerned with the technique itself than with intensifying the graphic expression and increasing the tension of the forms. In the present work, Soutter also painted with a brush despite arthritis in his fingers. The brushstroke seems uncontrolled: Straight strokes alternate with curved, wavy and choppy ones; they overlap and intermingle. In many cases the artist does not keep to his pictorial composition on the given format of the sheet, as this work blatantly shows: Having probably overestimated the available space, Soutter is unable to depict the figure's head for reasons of space, which is tantamount to mutilation and thus reflects his own psychological situation. Through the apt title, however, Soutter transforms this formal accident into a poetic event
