    Comments

Despite his serious illness, Klee produced numerous works in the last two years of his life: 1253 works were registered in 1939 and 398 in 1940. The large gestures and symbolic formal language are pronounced in this "late work", both of which were also caused by the progressive course of his illness. Apart from the last 30 or so works in his œuvre that remained untitled, the works continued to bear the carefully considered titles typical of Klee until the end. On 16 February 1940, the anniversary exhibition "Paul Klee. Neue Werke" (Paul Klee: New Works), which was to be the last self-conceived presentation of his late work.

The sheet offered here, "Simplex besucht Complex" (Simplex visits Complex), comes from a series of sheets of the same format in black paste colour and captivates in its title with an ambiguous joke. Although Klee had spent a good half of his life in Bern, it was not until the end of 1939 that he was granted permission to proceed with his application for Swiss citizenship, which he had submitted in April. On 5 July 1940, the Bern municipal council wanted to consider his naturalisation, but this did not come to pass: because his health deteriorated badly at the beginning of April 1940, he went to a sanatorium in Ticino for treatment, where he died on 29 June 1940 in the Clinica Sant'Agnese in Muralto. The sheet offered here is one of the artist's last works ever and a proof of his tireless creative and innovative power
