    Comments

On 21 April 1933 Paul Klee was summarily suspended as professor at the Düsseldorf Academy. Classified by the National Socialists as a "degenerate artist" and as "politically unreliable", he was officially dismissed on 1 January 1934 on the basis of the "Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service". The Klee couple emigrated to Switzerland at the end of December 1933 and moved into Klee's parents' house in Bern on Christmas Eve. In June 1934 Paul and Lily moved into a three-room flat at Kistlerweg 6 in Bern's Elfenau neighbourhood.

Emigration and the uncertainties in Germany had a direct effect on his work, which became darker, gloomier and more questioning

Klee gave "Zweig und Blatt" to his early collector and supporter Johanna (Hanni) Bürgi-Bigler (1880-1938) for Christmas 1935. She had met the artist in 1908 at Klee's parents' home when she was taking regular singing lessons from his father Hans. The Bürgi couple acquired works by the master early on, and after Alfred Bürgi's untimely death in 1919, Hanni Bürgi continued to expand the collection. As a member of the board of the Kunsthalle association, she was instrumental in organising the large Klee retrospective in 1935, where the print offered here was exhibitedA very personal print with an important provenance
