A wonderful example of Marc Chagall's artistic invention: different narrative strands are spread out "simultaneously" on different coloured surfaces so that they also result in an abstract picture: The lovers on red, the mystical animal on yellow, the tree of life on turquoise - and finally the painter himself on blue. The motifs are outlined almost like drawings, with Vitebsk silhouetted in the background

Ein wunderbares Beispiel von Marc Chagalls künstlerischer Invention: Verschiedene Narrationsstränge werden auf unterschiedliche Farbflächen "simultan" ausgebreitet, sodass sie auch ein abstraktes Bild ergeben: Das Liebespaar auf Rot, das mystische Tier auf Gelb, der Lebensbaum auf Türkis – und schliesslich der Maler selbst auf Blau. Fast zeichnerisch konturiert sind die Motive angelegt, im Hintergrund ist schemenhaft Witebsk zu erkennen
