Comments

La Baou de Saint-Jeannet is a steeply sloping cliff above the hilly landscape of Vence. Ever since moving to the south, Chagall had been fascinated by the drama of the rock structure in the otherwise charming landscape. He created several paintings and a lithograph showing the rock spur. Finally, in 1969, he painted "La Baou de Saint-Jeannet", the most important picture of the motif group. The mountain top becomes an intimate pair of lovers, the bouquets of "flower-fireworks" testify to love. The small picture on offer is a wonderful preliminary work, here still in landscape format

Erläuterungen

La Baou de Saint-Jeannet ist ein steil abfallender Felsvorsprung oberhalb der Hügellandschaft von Vence. Chagall war seit seinem Umzug in den Süden von der Dramatik der Felsstruktur in der sonst lieblichen Landschaft sehr fasziniert. Es entstanden mehrere Gemälde und auch eine Lithographie, die den Felssporn zeigen. 1969 schliesslich entsteht "La Baou de Saint-Jeannet", das wichtigste Bild der Motivgruppe. Die Bergspitze wird zum innigen Liebespaar, die Blumenbouquets quasi zu Feuerwerken, die die Liebe bezeugen. Das hier angebotene, kleine Bild ist eine wunderbare Vorarbeit, hier noch im Querformat
