From the very beginning Chagall’s art reflects memories of rural life in his home town of Vitebsk. Farmers and merchants, as well as jugglers and musicians who regularly stopped by, shaped the image of the small town. Chagall also regularly depicted Jewish life in otherwise Orthodox Russia. Here a village scene, a farmer with his calf before the ritual act, in the background the characteristic one-storey farmhouses, on the left what looks like the synagogue. A very picturesque depiction, powerfully executed in bright colours

Erläuterungen

Erinnerungen an das rurale Leben in seiner Heimatstadt Witebsk finden sich seit den Anfängen in Chagalls Kunst. Bauern und Kaufleute, aber auch die regelmässig vorbeischauenden Gaukler und Musikanten prägten das Bild der Kleinstadt. Das jüdische Leben im sonst orthodoxen Russland wird regelmässig thematisiert. Hier eine Dorfszene, ein Bauer mit seinem Kalb vor dem Ritualakt, im Hintergrund die charakteristischen, einstöckigen Bauernhäuser, links wohl die Synagoge. Eine sehr malerische Darstellung, kraftvoll umgesetzt in leuchtenden Farben
