The motif of the artist at his easel visited by an angel occurs frequently in Chagall’s oeuvre. The angel could be interpreted as a bearer of inspiration; a "genius" rather than a biblical angel. Bouquets of flowers – symbolising "joie de vivre" – bloom lusciously. At the top, next to the red sun-moon, we see a hovering pair of lovers

Das Motiv des Künstlers, der an der Staffelei sitzend von einem "Engel" besucht wird, kommt in Chagalls Œuvre häufig vor. Der Engel darf als Überbringer von inspirierter Kraft gedeutet werden, vielmehr als "Genius", denn als Engel der Bibel. Üppig blühen Blumensträusse, die als Symbole der Lebensfreude gelten, oben, neben dem roten "Sonnen-Mond" schwebt ein Liebespaar
