Die Beschäftigung mit dem Thema Zirkus in unterschiedlichsten Techniken intensiviert sich in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren und gipfelt 1967, nach Erforschung der Kompositionen in vorbereitenden Gemälden und Gouachen, in der Umsetzung in farbige Lithographien für die Publikation "Le Cirque" von Tériade Éditeurs, Paris. Man spürt Chagalls enge Verbindung mit Bühnenbild- und Kostümgestaltungen in der dichten, freien Komposition
