    Comments

As with her first graphic cycle "A Weavers' Revolt", Käthe Kollwitz also works with a historical event in "Peasants' War". The point of departure is probably the publication by the theologian and historian Wilhelm Zimmermann on the great German Peasants' War of 1524/1525, which appeared in 1843 and to which social democratic circles in the 19th century liked to refer. For Käthe Kollwitz and her liberal-socialist environment, the descriptions reflect great topicality. Initially, the artist planned the cycle as colour lithographs (cf. the first version in lithograph "Bewaffnung in einem Gewölbe", Knesebeck 65, there dated "before June 1902"). When in 1904, through the mediation of Max Lehrs, the director of the Dresden Kupferstich-Kabinett, she was commissioned by the "Verbindung für historische Kunst" to create the works as an annual gift for the association, she executed the prints as etchings (cf. etching sheet 4 of the series "Bauernkrieg", Knesebeck 96, there dated "before mid-June 1906"). In 1907 she was the first woman to be awarded the "Villa Romana Prize", founded by Max Klinger, for the masterly created and printed seven sheets (Knesebeck 70, 88, 96, 99, 100, 101, 102) of the Peasants' War, even before the series was completed

Important preliminary drawing for the first version in lithograph, which impressively shows the artist's creative process
