The sheet mounted on a wooden plate, parquet. Varnished. In places with smaller, old tears in the paper. Paper partly slightly set up due to gluing. Lower right corner of the wooden plate a little bit damaged. In a stable and fresh condition

The present work is an early study of the first figure from the right of the four-figure version of "Empfindung" of 1901. Hodler describes the pictorial theme of "Empfindung" in a carnet as follows: "Je veux exprimer l'émotion que pouvaient avoir ressenti des femmes en passant sur un pré fleuri." (from: Carnet, Cabinet d'arts graphiques du Musée d'art et d'histoire, Geneva, inv. no. 1958-0176/023.15)

The left leg of the female figure is not yet covered by the blue robe, as in the later versions, and the hands are rendered in a praying posture. Hodler reworked the original drawing on paper after mounting it on cardboard and thus deliberately upgraded it to a painting through these overpaintings executed in oil and Indian ink. This work was published for the first time in the catalogue raisonné of 2017 and was unknown until then

Erläuterungen

Beim vorliegenden Werk handelt es sich um eine frühe Studie zur ersten Figur von rechts der vierfigurigen Fassung der "Empfindung" von 1901. Das Bildthema der "Empfindung" umschreibt Hodler in einem Carnet wie folgt: "Je veux exprimer l'émotion que pouvaient avoir ressenti des femmes en passant sur un pré fleuri." (aus: Carnet, Cabinet d'arts graphiques du Musée d'art et d'histoire, Genf, Inv. Nr. 1958-0176/023.15)

Das linke Bein der Frauenfigur ist noch nicht vom blauen Gewand bedeckt, wie in den späteren Fassungen, und die Hände sind in Gebetshaltung wiedergegeben. Die ursprüngliche Zeichnung auf Papier hat Hodler nach dem Aufziehen auf Karton überarbeitet und so durch diese in Öl und Tusche ausgeführten Übermalungen bewusst zu einem Gemälde aufgewertet. Das vorliegende Werk wurde erstmals im Werkverzeichnis von 2017 publiziert und war bis dahin unbekannt
