Albert Gleizes is considered one of the first representatives of Cubism, having written "Du Cubisme" together with Jean Metzinger in 1912. Discharged as a soldier, Gleizes was able to leave France with his wife in September 1915 and moved to the USA. However, he returned to Europe as early as 1916 for a stay in Barcelona. There he had his first solo exhibition at the Dalmau Gallery. Varichon titled this phase of his work (1915-1919) "Le nouveau Monde ou l'abstraction lyrique". The still life on offer, hitherto unknown to the catalogue raisonné, is one of the rare works with flowers from this period. Stylistically, it can be grouped with the still lifes with bottles or fruit, which were also painted in 1916, and it still bears strong witness to the Cubist influence

Albert Gleizes gilt als einer der ersten Vertreter des Kubismus, verfasste er doch zusammen mit Jean Metzinger 1912 die Schrift "Du Cubisme". Als Soldat ausgemustert, konnte Gleizes im September 1915 mit seiner Frau Frankreich verlassen und setzte in die USA über. Bereits 1916 kehrte er jedoch für einen Aufenthalt in Barcelona nach Europa zurück. Dort hatte er seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Dalmau. Varichon betitelt diese Werkphase (1915-1919) "Le nouveau Monde ou l'abstraction lyrique". Das angebotene, bis anhin dem Werkverzeichnis unbekannte Stillleben, ist eines der seltenen Werke mit Blumen aus dieser Zeit. Es lässt sich stilistisch zu den Stillleben mit Flaschen oder Früchten reihen, die ebenfalls 1916 entstanden sind, und zeugt noch stark vom kubistischen Einfluss
