On very firm, cream-coloured wove paper, cut paper edge on the left, fresh in colours and in immaculate overall condition

Comments

A poetic depiction of the seafront of Nice, the Baie des Anges, probably painted from Mont Boron; in the foreground is the harbour wall with the outline of the lighthouse. A woman partially into a tree brings a lavish bouquet of thanks to the region to which Chagall owes so much. It is also a symbol of the creativity he has been inspired to there. The moon reflected in the water bathes the scene in a mysterious, velvety light. This is a wonderful homage to the incomparable colours of the Mediterranean

Erläuterungen

Eine sehr poetische Darstellung der Meeresfront von Nizza, der "Baie des Anges", wohl gemalt vom Mont Boron aus, im Vordergrund die Hafenmauer mit dem angedeuteten Leuchtturm. Eine quasi zum Baum verwandelte Frau überbringt der Region, der Chagall viel zu verdanken hat, einen üppigen Dankesstrauss – der zugleich auch für die empfangene Kreativität steht. Der sich im Wasser spiegelnde Mond taucht die Szenerie in eine geheimnisvolle, samtene Atmosphäre. Eine wunderbare Hommage an die unvergleichlich leuchtende Farbigkeit der "Méditerranée"
