Estate of the artist
On cream-coloured wove paper, with irregular edges, worked on the back of a printed page of a book, fresh in colours and in immaculate overall condition
The motif of the anthropomorphic instrument recurs frequently in the artist’s œuvre. It is the stylised symbiosis of art and artist. Here the instrument is played by the creator of the music; it is in the Book of Life in the middle of the composition. The scene takes place on the village square of Vitebsk. The sun shines on the roofs, a gleam of light over Chagall’s Russian birthplace in this small, delicate artwork which lives on memories while giving them new form
