The clock symbolises time, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Here the clock even becomes a self-portrait, the hands set at ten minutes after ten like as every clock in Chagall’s compositions, creating a balanced arrangement of time. Angels, a flautist and other people surround the watchman who holds a bouquet of flowers in his hands, the flowers bringing together stories from real life. In the background the rooftops of Paris and the Eiffel Tower are visible. This highly personal, humorous, colourful depiction of life is a very free drawn, interesting work
