On smooth, folded wove paper, with irregular edges and some wrinkles. Fresh in colours and in immaculate overall condition

Comments

A flute player with a vivid green face represents inspiration and renewal and is also a metaphor for the artist himself. Above him floats the mystical animal symbolising creativity and a bird symbolising permanence. The woman as life giver and beloved points to the musician. The horizontal division of the elements and colour spaces is intriguing – above in the blue section, creativity and thought are dominant, while below in the red section, life and memory prevail in a scene, with the outlines of the houses of Chagall’s hometown Vitebsk. The two sections are incorporated within a boldly described composition

Erläuterungen

Ein Flötenspieler mit strahlend grünem Gesicht; er steht für die Inspiration und die Erneuerung – metaphorisch auch für den Künstler selbst. Über ihm schweben das die Kreativität darstellende "mystische Tier" sowie der Beständigkeit symbolisierende Vogel. Die Frau als Lebensspenderin und "Geliebte" weist auf den Musikanten. Spannend die horizontale Aufteilung der Elemente und der Farbräume – oben im Blau die Kreativität und die Gedanken, unten im Rot das Leben und die Erinnerung, angedeutet die Häuser von Chagalls Heimatstadt Witebsk. Verbunden werden die beiden Ebenen durch einen kraftvollen und eindrücklichen Bildaufbau
