Condition

On thin wove paper (papier vélin) with watermark "ARCHES". Clean condition, slightly browned and with light margins. In the upper corners with tear nail holes

Comments

Lucienne Bernard was the widow of the Resistance fighter and poet Roger Bernard (1921-1944). After the war, Matisse wanted to illustrate his poems, including a portrait of Lucienne. She therefore travelled to Vence in May 1946 for a portrait session after Matisse had sent her money. Several drawings were made, but the project was ultimately not realised

Erläuterungen

Lucienne Bernard war die Witwe des Resistancekämpfers und Poeten Roger Bernard (1921-1944). Nach dem Krieg wollte Matisse dessen Gedichte illustrieren, unter anderem mit einem Portrait von Lucienne. Sie reiste daher im Mai 1946 für eine Portraitsitzung nach Vence, nachdem ihr Matisse Geld geschickt hatte. Es entstanden mehrere Zeichnungen, das Projekt wurde aber schliesslich nicht umgesetzt
