Condition

Perfectly preserved, perfectly fresh in colours, on the old stretcher, in the old mounting. Without any restoration intervention. Top right with a staple in the painting surface, applied by the artist to fix the canvas. In a simple silver frame, with back mouldings covering the signature on the reverse and some exhibition labels

One of the large-format works, created in 1952, in the artist's second studio at 14, rue Tiphaine in Paris. One of the main works of the monochrome phase, acquired in 1958 in Paris by a Swiss private collector and since then in the same family possession
Sam Francis comes to Paris in 1950, supported by the "G.I. Bill", an educational grant for ex-servicemen. He met the Canadian painter Paul Riopelle, who had already been living in Paris since 1946, and joined the ranks of the American painters Al Held, Shirley Jaffe, Kimber Smith, Norman Bluhm and Joan Mitchell, who had gradually arrived in Paris. He lived in a small studio on the Boulevard Arago in Montparnasse. It was only after moving to the more spacious studio on rue Tiphaine in the 15th arrondissement that he was able to paint larger pictures

Zustand

Tadellos in der Erhaltung, vollkommen farbfrisch, auf dem alten Chassis, in der alten Nagelung. Ohne jeglichen restauratorischen Eingriff. Oben rechts mit einer Heftklammer in der Malfläche, vom Künstler zur Fixierung der Leinwand angebracht. In einfachem Silberrahmen, mit rückwärtigen Leisten, die die rückseitige Signatur und einige Ausstellungsetiketten verdecken

Eines der grossformatigen Werke, entstanden 1952, im zweiten Atelier des Künstlers an der 14, rue Tiphaine in Paris. Eines der Hauptwerke der monochromen Phase, erworben 1958 in Paris durch einen Schweizer Privatsammler und seither im gleichen Familienbesitz
Sam Francis kommt 1950 nach Paris, unterstützt durch die «G.I. Bill», eine Ausbildungsunterstützung für ehemalige Soldaten. Er lernt den bereits seit 1946 in Paris lebenden kanadischen Maler Paul Riopelle kennen und schliesst sich den sukzessiv nach Paris gekommenen amerikanischen Malerinnen und Malern Al Held, Shirley Jaffe, Kimber Smith, Norman Bluhm und Joan Mitchell an. Er wohnt in einem kleinen Studio am Boulevard Arago in Montparnasse. Erst durch den Umzug in das geräumigere Studio an der rue Tiphaine im 15. Arrondissement hat er die Möglichkeit auch grössere Bilder zu malen
