Splendid condition print, with strong plate tone and probably monotype-like inked, still from the uncleaned plate. On old Japanese handmade paper, with very wide paper margin, perfect condition
Of greatest rarity, Delteil mentions 6 copies, Reed/Shapiro 7 known copies, both including the present copy
Most probably the plate was made in Rome in 1857, during Degas' long study stay in Italy, after Joseph Tourny, a graphic artist, had initiated him into the art of etching in Italy. The present sheet on Japanese laid paper without watermark. Reed/Shapiro believe that the few prints of the III state with the watermark "MB" were printed in 1860/1861. The present sheet was probably printed before 1860/1861
The only self-portrait in the artist's graphic oeuvre and one of the most important etchings in the artist's entire graphic œuvre, printed in the present state as a frontispiece by both Delteil (Paris 1919) and Reed/Shapiro (Boston 1984)
