The book and the drawings in impeccable condition
Ten years after the publication of his surrealist manifesto, André Breton published "L'air de l'eau" in close collaboration with Alberto Giacometti. The author attached great importance to ensuring that Alberto Giacometti's etchings were not assigned to individual passages of the book, but rather reflected the poetic work as a whole. Giacometti provided four etchings: "L'animal", "Fée du sel", "La main" and "Le chevalier de paille".
The present lot also includes two outstanding preliminary drawings in pencil for two of the four etchings: "L'animal" and "La main".
The surreal character that shaped Giacometti's work at that time is unmistakably reflected in the heraldic mythical creature from the preliminary drawing for "L'animal". The hairless head, almond-shaped eyes, and animated tail create a bizarre effect.
Among the most beautiful sheets of the cycle is also "La main". In this preliminary drawing of the depicted hand, the Tower of Babel appears - a motif that recalls the figure of Jacqueline Lamba, Breton's muse, in the facing poem.
An "exemplaire truffé" like this is of great rarity. The artistic binding is by Jean Luc Honegger from Bernex near Geneva. The stamp on the endpaper indicates an original binding by Georges Gauché, Paris.
