With drawing pin holes in the corners. Fresh in colour and in excellent condition
The present work shows a characteristic composition from the middle creative period of Sam Francis, documenting his transition to a more concentrated pictorial language. In contrast to the all-over colouration of his earlier works, this study focuses on a central, vertically oriented colour zone in the upper part of the picture. Intense violet, yellow, orange, and black tones condense into a compact form from which numerous colour runs and drip marks flow downward.
The combination of gouache and watercolour enables Francis to achieve nuanced layering of opaque and transparent areas of colour. The spontaneous gesture and the deliberately allowed colour runs create a dynamic between control and chance. The generously left white paper ground functions as an active pictorial element and enhances the luminosity of the concentrated colour zone. Fine splashes and linear traces across the entire surface create a rhythmic dialogue between emptiness and fullness.
This work was created in Tokyo, where Francis stayed from mid-September to early December 1957. There, he received a commission for a major mural in the auditorium of the Sogetsu Kaikan and at times lived in a temple, which was a lasting experience for the artist. Throughout his life, he remained deeply impressed by Japanese art and way of life.
