Commentaires

For trial proofs of this plate, Harris was able to verify only one state. In total, he knew of only 10 copies, including this one.

The Spanish rural population fled from the advancing French troops because destruction and atrocities were to be expected. The buildings on the hills in the background represent the threatened locations. In the foreground, Goya shows a mother with her children and a priest who clutches his money pouch and flees with a second man. The horror is written on his face. Goya chose a title that expresses he himself experienced what is depicted. The print thus attains the status of an eyewitness account.

Erläuterungen

Für Probedrucke dieser Platte konnte Harris nur einen Zustand nachweisen. Insgesamt waren ihm nur 10 Exemplare bekannt, dieses eingeschlossen.

Die spanische Landbevölkerung floh vor den heranrückenden französischen Truppen, weil Zerstörungen und Gräueltaten zu erwarten waren. Die Bauwerke auf den Hügeln im Hintergrund stehen stellvertretend für die bedrohten Orte. Im Vordergrund zeigt Goya eine Mutter mit ihren Kindern und einen Priester, der sein Geldsäckchen umklammert und mit einem zweiten Mann flieht. Das Entsetzen ist ihm ins Gesicht geschrieben. Goya wählte einen Titel, der zum Ausdruck bringt, er habe das Dargestellte selbst erlebt. Die Graphik erhält den Rang eines Augenzeugenberichts.
