Commentaires

From the mid-1950s, Kimber Smith was part of the circle of American artists living in Paris, such as Joan Mitchell, Sam Francis, and Shirley Jaffe, representatives of the New York School of the second generation after Abstract Expressionism. During this productive period, Smith's painterly style and his progressive approach to abstraction matured, which he would maintain until the end of his life. The present work was created in the USA, to which he returned in the mid-1960s. "Mme Rose" is a fascinating composition, painted with loose brushwork and a sparing use of colour.

Kimber Smith zählte ab Mitte der 1950er-Jahre zum Kreis der in Paris lebenden amerikanischen Künstler wie Joan Mitchell, Sam Francis und Shirley Jaffe, Vertreter der New Yorker Schule der zweiten Generation nach dem Abstrakten Expressionismus. In dieser produktiven Zeit reifte Smiths malerischer Stil und seine fortschrittliche Herangehensweise an die Abstraktion, die er bis zu seinem Lebensende beibehalten sollte. Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand in den USA, wohin er Mitte der 1960er-Jahre zurückkehrte. "Mme Rose" ist eine faszinierende, in lockerem Pinsel- und sparsamen Farbauftrag gemalte Komposition.
