    Commentaires

During his time in Paris (1950-1958), Sam Francis's artistic development was significantly shaped by encounters with various artists and movements. He formed connections with artists such as Jean-Paul Riopelle and Joan Mitchell. The close study of Claude Monet's water lilies also had a profound influence on his work. Francis's works are often attributed to Tachisme, a branch of Informel characterised by a spontaneous, gestural painting style and closely related to Abstract Expressionism.

'Blue and Yellow' is a fine example from his Parisian period, during which Francis engaged intensely with light, colour and space. The dominant colours - a deep blue and a radiant yellow - create a vibrant tension that generates both harmony and contrast.

Francis applied the paint in thin layers using glazing techniques, so that the light seems to break within the image. The flowing, partly cloud-like colour forms evoke natural phenomena such as water, sky, or light reflections, without directly depicting them. Instead of working representationally, with 'Blue and Yellow' Francis created an emotionally charged field of colour - a typical example of his effort to understand colour as an autonomous means of expression. The work impressively shows how Francis drew from influences such as Tachisme and American Abstract Expressionism, yet found his own visual language.
