Commentaires

All five depictions of this series of the standing apostles that was never further worked on by Dürer. All quite excellent impressions, often still printed with plate tone. This group, important for Dürer's late prints, is rarely found in such uniformity. Only Philippus has a small damage in the lower right corner. The early provenance is also fascinating. The prints were collected in the course of the 17th century by the younger Pierre Mariette, one of the most important members of the Parisian family of collectors and dealers, and have remained together ever since. The purchases were made as follows: Philippus 1652 / Thomas 1657 / Paulus 1666 / Simon 1667 / Bartholomew 1692.

Executed over a period of twelve years, the prints illustrate the master's continuing development of his engraving technique, even in the last decade of his life. The earliest print, "Thomas", created in 1514, still shows strong contrasts between light and dark, while the compositions of the 1520s are characterised by subtly balanced, silvery, shimmering grey tones. It is also striking that only the two early apostles wear a halo, which is missing in the three post-Reformation sheets.

Erläuterungen

Alle fünf Darstellungen dieser von Dürer niemals weiter ausgeführten Folge der stehenden Apostel. Sämtlich in ganz ausgezeichneten Drucken, oft noch mit Plattenton druckend. In solcher Einheitlichkeit ist diese für Dürers graphisches Spätwerk wichtige Gruppe nur höchst selten zu finden. Lediglich beim Philippus eine minime Beschädigung in der rechten unteren Ecke. Faszinierend ist auch die frühe Provenienz. So wurden die Blätter bereits im Laufe des 17. Jahrhunderts vom jüngeren Pierre Mariette, einem der wichtigsten Mitglieder der Pariser Sammler- und Händlerfamilie, zusammengetragen und blieben seitdem zusammen. Die Ankäufe wurden wie folgt getätigt: Philippus 1652 / Thomas 1657 / Paulus 1666 / Simon 1667 / Bartholomäus 1692.

Über einen Zeitraum von zwölf Jahren ausgeführt, veranschaulichen die Blätter die sich auch im letzten Lebensjahrzehnt noch stets weiter entwickelnde Stichtechnik des Meistergraphikers. So zeigt die frühste Darstellung, der 1514 geschaffene "Thomas", noch starke Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste, während in den Kompositionen der 1520er Jahre subtilst abgestimmte, silbrig schimmernde Grauwerte den Bildeindruck prägen. Des weiteren fällt auf, dass nur die beiden frühen Apostel einen Heiligenschein tragen, der dann bei den drei nachreformatorischen Blättern fehlt.
