Niki de Saint-Phalle takes up a theme here that has to do both with her name "Holy Phallus" and with the AIDS epidemic that peaked in Europe in the mid-1980s. Around ten years later, the artist caused furious protests when her stamp with a similar motif issued by the Swiss Postcame into circulation.
