Commentaires

The present work depicts Evelina Giacometti-Stampa (1882-1969), the wife of Antonio Giacometti (1868-1937), a cousin of Alberto's father Giovanni. Evelina and Antonio lived with their six children in a villa in the Monteverde neighbourhood of Rome, just outside the city beyond Trastevere. The trained confectioner ran the Pasticceria Gilli, Bezzola & Co. on Via Nazionale in Rome from 1898. Alberto lived with the family in Rome, having previously visited Florence, Perugia and Assisi on his second trip to Italy starting in mid-November 1920. The portrait must have been painted during this stay.

Erläuterungen

Das vorliegende Werk stellt Evelina Giacometti-Stampa (1882-1969) dar, die Frau von Antonio Giacometti (1868-1937), einem Cousin von Albertos Vater Giovanni. Evelina und Antonio wohnten mit ihren sechs Kindern in einer Villa im etwas stadtauswärts hinter Trastevere gelegenen Viertel Monteverde in Rom. Der gelernte Zuckerbäcker leitete ab 1898 die Pasticceria Gilli, Bezzola & Co. an der Via Nazionale in Rom. Alberto wohnte bei der Familie in Rom, nachdem er zuvor auf seiner zweiten Italienreise, ab Mitte November 1920, Florenz, Perugia und Assisi besucht hatte. Das Porträt muss wohl während dieses Aufenthalts entstanden sein.
