Commentaires

Giacometti made this extraordinary drawing at the age of 13, when he was probably preoccupied with the French Revolution. In 1793, the Swiss Guard failed to prevent the execution of Louis XVI. A year earlier, in 1792, the Swiss regiments and the bodyguard of the "Hundertschweizer" had already been dismissed by the National Assembly and the Swiss Guard regiment had been almost completely wiped out in the turmoil of the Revolution.

Erläuterungen

Diese aussergewöhnliche Zeichnung fertigte Giacometti im Alter von 13 Jahren an, als er sich wohl mit der Französischen Revolution befasste. 1793 konnte die Schweizer Garde die Hinrichtung Ludwigs XVI. nicht verhindern. Bereits ein Jahr zuvor, 1792, waren die Schweizer Regimenter und die Leibgarde der "Hundertschweizer" von der Nationalversammlung entlassen und das Regiment der Schweizer Garde in den Revolutionswirren fast vollständig aufgerieben worden.
