Slightly browned in the margins. Some light stains on the reverse. Very fine impression in good condition

Commentaires

Having produced lithographs in the 1870s, Degas returned to the medium in the early 1890s. On 6 July 1891, he wrote to his friend Evariste de Valernes that he hoped to create a suite of lithographs. The first would be of nude ladies at the toilet, the next of nude dancers. The present print is from the first group and shows a lady drying herself from behind. It is a wonderfully poetic depiction, created as a transfer from monotype to lithography. Reed/Shapiro know of 8 copies of state VI.

Erläuterungen

Nachdem Degas bereits in den 1870er-Jahren Lithographien hergestellt hatte, wandte er sich Anfang der 1890er-Jahre erneut diesem Medium zu. An seinen Freund Evariste de Valernes schrieb er am 6. Juli 1891, dass er hoffe, eine Suite mit Lithographien zu schaffen. Die ersten sollten nackte Damen bei der Toilette zum Thema haben, die nächsten nackte Tänzer. Das vorliegende Blatt stammt aus der ersten Gruppe und zeigt eine sich trocknende Dame in Rückenansicht. Es ist eine wunderbar poetische Darstellung, entstanden als Umdruck einer Monotypie in den Steindruck. Reed/Shapiro sind 8 Exemplare des VI . Zustandes bekannt geworden.
