Andy Warhol is regarded as one of the leading representatives of Pop Art in the USA in the 1960s. After an early career as a commercial artist, he achieved fame with his revolutionary series of screen prints and paintings of everyday objects such as Campbell's soup cans and portraits. In his portraits, he differentiated between the iconic self-portraits from various creative phases, the "commissioned paintings" that anyone could have made by the master for a fee, and the portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley. Visual artists also made it into Warhol's portrait gallery, namely Paul Jenkins, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg. However, he portrayed no other artist more frequently than Joseph Beuys. Beuys had stirred up New York's art scene with his legendary performance entitled "Coyote, I like America and America likes Me" at the René Block Gallery on 25 May 1974. The performance with a coyote went down in art history. However, Beuys did not want to meet fellow artists at the time. The two artists therefore only met in Düsseldorf in May 1979, when Warhol showed his "Indian Portraits" at the Hans Mayer Gallery. A few months later, they met again as part of the major Beuys retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where the legendary photograph for the "Beuys Series" was finally taken. As is so often the case, Warhol experimented with different formats and printed the same motif several times on the canvas. The work offered here shows him with his typical felt hat in a group of four on a green background and is a special document of a special artistic relationship.

Andy Warhol gilt als einer der führenden Vertreter der Pop-Art-Bewegung in den USA der 1960er-Jahre. Nach einer frühen Karriere als Werbegrafiker erlangte er Berühmtheit mit seinen revolutionären Serien von Siebdrucken und Gemälden von Alltagsgegenständen wie Campbell’s Suppendosen oder Porträts. Bei den Porträts unterschied er zwischen den ikonischen Selbstporträts aus verschiedenen Schaffensphasen, den "Auftragsgemälden", die jedermann beim Meister gegen Bezahlung anfertigen lassen konnte, und den Porträts von Berühmtheiten wie Marilyn Monroe oder Elvis Presley. Auch bildende Künstler schafften es in Warhols Porträtgalerie, namentlich Paul Jenkins, Roy Lichtenstein oder Robert Rauschenberg. Keinen anderen Künstler setzte er aber häufiger um als Joseph Beuys. Beuys hatte New Yorks Kunstszene mit seiner legendären am 25. Mai 1974 in der Galerie René Block durchgeführten Performance mit dem Titel "Coyote, I like America and America likes Me" aufgewühlt. Die Performance mit einem lebenden Kojoten ging in die Kunstgeschichte ein. Doch Beuys wollte damals keine Künstlerkollegen treffen. Darum trafen sich die beiden Künstler erst im Mai 1979 in Düsseldorf, als Warhol in der Galerie Hans Mayer seine "Indian Portraits" zeigte. Einige Monate später kam es im Rahmen der grossen Beuys-Retrospektive im New Yorker Guggenheim Museum zu einem erneuten Treffen, bei dem schliesslich auch die legendäre Aufnahme für die "Beuys-Serie" entstand. Wie so oft experimentierte Warhol auch hier mit verschiedenen Formaten und druckte das gleiche Motiv mehrfach auf die Leinwand. Die hier angebotene Arbeit zeigt den mit seinem typischen Filzhut in einer Vierergruppe auf grünem Grund und ist ein besonderes Dokument einer besonderen Künstlerbeziehung.
