When Franz Gertsch gave up painting for a few years in 1986 in favour of woodcuts, the first group he created were four different portraits of "Natascha". In this printing technique, he found the ideal way to print a motif in different, monochrome colour variations. He used his own photographs as templates for his woodcuts, which he transferred onto wooden panels in a lengthy work process. Using a small gouge, he created a fine grid of "Lichtpunkten" which, when printed, allowed the white paper, or sometimes the underprint of a tone plate in a different colour, to shine through. This created a grid structure from which the motif was developed.

The model for this print here was Natascha Gertsch, a neighbour's daughter who was a friend of the family but not related to the artist. "Natascha III" was engraved in three pearwood blocks. A total of around 59 copies of the present sheet were printed in different colour variations and in several stages as a hand print on Hanga-Shi (cream) Japanese paper, including four proofs and 33 edition prints, one copy was destroyed by the artist after printing. The copy offered here was printed with three blocks, the colour designation according to the print book was "turquoise".

Natascha is considered one of the most complex woodcuts ever. The use of several blocks and the very even colouring make it appear very mysterious and powerful.

Als Franz Gertsch 1986 die Malerei für ein paar Jahre zugunsten des Holzschnitts aufgab, entstanden als erste Gruppe vier verschiedene Porträts von "Natascha". In dieser Drucktechnik fand er die ideale Möglichkeit, um ein Motiv in verschiedenen, monochromen Farbvariationen zu drucken. Als Vorlagen für seine Holzschnitte dienten ihm eigene Fotografien, die er in einem langwierigen Arbeitsprozess auf Holzplatten übertrug. Mit einem kleinen Hohleisen setzte er ein feines Raster von "Lichtpunkten", die beim Druck das weisse Papier, manchmal auch den Unterdruck einer Tonplatte in einer anderen Farbe, durchleuchten liessen. So entstand eine Rasterstruktur, aus der das Motiv entwickelt wurde.

Das Modell für das hier angebotene Blatt war Natascha Gertsch, eine mit der Familie befreundete, aber nicht mit dem Künstler verwandte Nachbarstochter. "Natascha III" wurde in drei Birnenholzplatten gestochen. Vom vorliegenden Blatt wurden in verschiedenen Farbvarianten und in mehreren Arbeitsgängen insgesamt ca. 59 Exemplare als Handabzug auf Hanga-Shi (Cream) Japanpapier gedruckt, davon vier Probedrucke und 33 Auflagedrucke, ein Exemplar wurde vom Künstler nach dem Druck zerstört. Das hier angebotene Exemplar wurde mit drei Platten gedruckt , die Farbbezeichnung laut Druckbuch war "Türkis".

Natascha gilt als einer der komplexesten Holzschnitte überhaupt. Die Verwendung mehrerer Platten und die sehr angeglichene Einfärbung lassen sie als sehr geheimnis- und kraftvoll erscheinen.
