A bouquet of flowers in shades of blue and violet gleames in a red and yellow vase in front of the implied silhouette of Saint-Paul. On one side, an intimately entwined pair of lovers floats delicately, while the "sun-moon" on the left focuses the evening light. The very ethereal composition of the painting is a metaphor for life, joy and happiness in the south of France. In 1966, Chagall moved from Vence to Saint-Paul-de-Vence into a spacious house and studio he had designed, surrounded by inspiring woodland as well as orange and olive trees.

Few artists have achieved what Chagall has: his works have become firmly engraved in the collective memory of art history. It is above all the lyrical and playful gesture, the unrivalled iconography and the obvious joie of vivre that make them so unique and unmistakable.

Vor der angedeuteten Silhouette von Saint-Paul leuchtet ein in Blau- und Violetttönen gehaltener Blumenstrauss in einer rot-gelben Vase. Zart angedeutet schwebt auf der einen Seite ein innig umschlungenes Liebespaar, während der "Sonnenmond" links das Abendlicht bündelt. Das sehr ätherisch komponierte Gemälde steht als Metapher für das Leben, die Freude und das Glück in Südfrankreich. 1966 zog Chagall von Vence nach Saint-Paul-de-Vence in ein von ihm konzipiertes, geräumiges Wohnhaus mit Atelier, in inspirierender Umgebung von Wald, Orangen- und Olivenbäumen gelegen.

Nur wenigen Künstlern gelang, was Chagall erreicht hat: Seine Werke haben sich fest in das kollektive Gedächtnis der Kunstgeschichte eingeprägt. Es sind vor allem der lyrische und spielerische Gestus, die unvergleichliche Ikonografie und die offensichtliche Lebensfreude, die sie so einzigartig und unverwechselbar machen.
