Commentaires

Picasso's first exploration of the theme of "Minotauromachie" in the field of graphic art in large format, created on 12 June 1934. Another version followed on 8 September 1934 (Geiser/Baer 433) and finally the main sheet "La Minotauromachie" on 23 March 1935 (Geiser/Baer 573). The present sheet was printed in April 1939 by order of Ambroise Vollard in 50 copies, but never circulated as a numbered edition. Individual copies came to Curt Valentin in New York until 1940, some with courtesy signatures of the artist, further copies came into circulation after 1945, some also with courtesy signatures. The majority of the edition remained unsigned in Paris.

Erläuterungen

Die erste Auseinandersetzung Picassos mit dem Thema "Minotauromachie" auf dem Gebiet der Graphik in grossem Format, geschaffen am 12. Juni 1934. Eine weitere Fassung folgte am 8. September 1934 (Geiser/Baer 433) und schliesslich das Hauptblatt "La Minotauromachie" am 23. März 1935 (Geiser/Baer 573). Das vorliegende Blatt wurde im April 1939 im Auftrag von Ambroise Vollard in 50 Exemplaren gedruckt, aber nie als nummerierte Auflage in Umlauf gebracht. Einzelne Exemplare kamen bis 1940 zu Curt Valentin nach New York, teilweise mit Gefälligkeitssignaturen des Künstlers, weitere Exemplare kamen nach 1945 in Umlauf, teilweise ebenfalls mit Gefälligkeitssignaturen. Das Gros der Auflage blieb unsigniert in Paris
