Commentaires

The small town of Saint-Mammès lies to the south-east of Fontainebleau, at the confluence of the Seine and the Loing. Alfred Sisley, who lived nearby in Veneux-Nadon at the time, painted over 100 views of the landscape and life in this village. Here he reproduces the "Canal du Loing", a fifty-kilometre waterway connecting the Seine with the Briare Canal through a series of some twenty locks. He composes the sky and the watery reflective surface of the canal with modulated dabs of colour of varying sizes, creating a light sunny mood, a dazzling sense of movement and atmosphere

Erläuterungen

Das kleine Städtchen Saint-Mammès liegt südöstlich von Fontainebleau, am Zusammenfluss von Seine und Loing. Alfred Sisley, der damals ganz in der Nähe in Veneux-Nadon lebte, malte über 100 Ansichten der Landschaft und des Lebens dieser Ortschaft. Hier gibt er den "Canal du Loing", eine fünfzig Kilometer lange Wasserstrasse, die durch eine Reihe von etwa zwanzig Schleusen die Seine mit dem Briare-Kanal verbindet, wieder. Er komponiert mit modulierten, unterschiedlich grossen Farbtupfern den Himmel und die wässrige widerspiegelnde Oberfläche des Kanals und erzeugt eine lichte sonnige Stimmung, ein schillerndes Gefühl von Bewegung und Atmosphäre
