Commentaires

The theme of mother and child runs like a leitmotif through Chagall's work. It is emblematic of life and love, just like the rooster and the bright bouquets of flowers. The two main figures seem to float above the rooftops of Vitebsk, behind them the mystical animal that stands for artistic inspiration. The typical one-storey houses of Vitebsk are surmounted by the white building of the synagogue and the Orthodox church; in front, Chagall's parents' house is stylised. In the lower right, the artist paints himself at the easel, the palette and brushes in his hand. A bouquet of flowers can be seen on the canvas - the flowering tree of life is growing out of the picture. The evening light bathes the whole scene in a strong red, also the colour of life; a pair of lovers can be seen in the moonlight

Erläuterungen

Das Thema von Mutter und Kind zieht sich wie ein Leitmotiv durch Chagalls Schaffen. Es steht sinnbildlich für das Leben und die Liebe, gleich wie der Hahn und die leuchtenden Blumenbouquets. Die beiden Hauptfiguren scheinen über den Dächern von Witebsk zu schweben, hinter ihnen das für die künstlerische Inspiration stehende, mystische Tier. Die typischen, einstöckigen Häuser Witebsks werden vom weissen Bau der Synagoge und der orthodoxen Kirche überragt, vorne stilisiert ist Chagalls Elternhaus zu sehen. Rechts unten malt sich der Künstler selber an der Staffelei, die Farbpalette und die Pinsel in der Hand. Auf der Leinwand ist ein Blumenstrauss zu sehen – aus dem Bild wächst der blühende Lebensbaum. Das Abendlicht taucht die ganze Szene in ein kräftiges Rot, ebenfalls die Farbe des Lebens; im Mond ist ein Liebespaar zu sehen
