Commentaires

An atmospheric representation of Nice with its Promenade des Anglais at dusk. On the seashore sits a woman, her face in Chagall’s colour of inspiration, green, her right hand on her heart, holding a bright bouquet of flowers on her lap. The setting sun and the orphic sky lend the composition a particular drama. A boat sails on the moonlit sea; at upper left is the outline of a figure, possibly the artist himself, reading the Book of Life

Erläuterungen

Eine besonders atmosphärische Darstellung von Nizza mit seiner "Promenade des Anglais" in der Dämmerung. Am Meeresufer sitzt eine Frau, das Gesicht mit Chagalls Farbe für Inspiration, Grün, gefärbt, die rechte Hand am Herz, auf dem Schoss einen leuchtenden Blumenstrauss haltend. Die untergehende Sonne und der förmlich "orphisch" bewegte Himmel verleihen der Komposition eine spezielle Dramatik. Auf dem vom Mondschein beleuchteten Meer fährt ein Segelboot, oben links, schemenhaft gezeichnet, ist wohl der Künstler selbst dargestellt, der im Buch des Lebens liest
