J’ai toujours considéré les clowns, les acrobates et les acteurs comme des êtres tragiquement humains qui ressembleraient, pour moi, aux personnages de certaines peintures religieuses, wrote Chagall in Chagall – Le Cirque, 1967. This sheet is a particularly elaborate illustration of a circus on a transparent, light-pink background. Numerous disparate figures and motifs are placed inside the arena, repeated in his various artistic interpretations of the theme, as is the circular motion and oscillation between concentration and distraction: The écuyères, tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, musicians and circus animals, and at the lower right, the artist himself, who pays homage to the vibrant scene with his bouquet of flowers

"J'ai toujours considéré les clowns, les acrobates et les acteurs comme des êtres tragiquement humains qui ressembleraient, pour moi, aux personnages de certaines peintures religieuses", schrieb Chagall in "Chagall - Le Cirque", 1967. Das vorliegende Blatt ist eine besonders figurenreich ausgearbeitete Zirkusdarstellung auf einem transparent gehaltenen, leicht rosa Grund. Im Rund der Manege sind zahlreiche Elemente angelegt, die sich immer wieder in seinen künstlerischen Umsetzungen des Themas finden, sowie die Kreisbewegung und das Oszillieren zwischen Fokussierung und weniger Präzisem: Die Écuyère, Seiltänzer, Trapezkünstler, die Musikanten, sowie Zirkustiere – und unten rechts der Künstler selbst, der dem fröhlichen Treiben mit seinem Blumenstrauss die Ehre erweist
