Commentaires

The years 1904/1905 were marked by the transition from the "Période bleu" to the "Période rose". It is assumed that Picasso's acquaintance with Fernande Olivier brought about the change from the melancholy motifs and colours of the "Blue Period" to the more cheerful tones and representations of the "Pink Period". Circus artists, harlequins, jugglers and also mothers with children become central in this new creative phase. In connection with the large-format painting "Les Saltimbanques" from 1905, now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and the epochal series of prints of the same name, numerous preparatory sketches were made. A very nice pen and ink drawing with jugglers and a trapeze artist

Erläuterungen

Die Jahre 1904/1905 waren geprägt vom Übergang der "Période bleu" in die "Période rose". Man nimmt an, dass Picassos Bekanntschaft mit Fernande Olivier den Wechsel der melancholischen Motive und Farbigkeit der "Blauen Periode" hin zu den fröhlicheren Tönen und Darstellungen der "Rosa Periode" bewirkt hat. Zirkusartisten, Harlekins, Gaukler und auch Mütter mit Kindern werden zentral in dieser neuen Schaffensphase. Im Zusammenhang mit dem grossformatigen Gemälde "Les Saltimbanques" von 1905, das sich heute in der National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, befindet, und der epochalen Graphikfolge mit demselben Namen entstanden zahlreiche vorbereitende Skizzen.
