Commentaires

Vollard commissioned Chagall in 1926 to begin with the preparatory work for the illustration of Jean de la Fontaine's "Fables". Chagall made the prints in the years after 1927, the editions were printed by Maurice Potin but Vollard did not publsih the book before his death. Tériade acquired all of Chagall's preparatory work and graphic work after 1945 and published the book in 1952. Copy of the ordinary edition numbered to 200

Erläuterungen

Ambroise Vollard hatte 1926 Chagall beauftragt, mit den Vorarbeiten zur Illustration des Werkes von Jean de la Fontaine, "Fables" zu beginnen. Chagall schuf die Radierungen in den Jahren nach 1927, die Auflagen wurden bei Maurice Potin ausgedruckt, aber Vollard brachte das Buch bis zu seinem Tode nicht heraus. Tériade kaufte die Vorarbeiten und publizierte das Werk in Buchform 1952
