The handwritten inscription is probably a direct allusion to Erik Satie's pantomime ballet "Jack in the Box", which he composed in 1899. He called it a "Clownerie" and a "Suite Anglaise". A direct connection between the two artists cannot be proven, but in 1893 Satie began an affair with Suzanne Valadon, who posed as an artist's model for Toulouse-Lautrec.
