    Comments

While the Minimalists understood their works as the result of a preconceived concept, Fred Sandback distanced himself from a strictly conceptualist approach. For him, a sensuous handling of the material and an intuitive working process were of central importance. This openness to the material shaped not only his sculptural work but also his works on paper. Unlike Donald Judd, who regarded drawings primarily as "working drawings" that is, as preparatory drafts, Sandback viewed drawing as an independent artistic form of expression. His drawn variations thus developed into an autonomous group of works within his oeuvre.
