    Comments

The composition unfolds a peculiar microcosm of grotesque faces and amorphous, barely definable forms. Created at the beginning of the First World War, the print can be interpreted as a visionary, almost traumatic premonition of the horrors to come. The visual language reflects an atmosphere of inner unrest and existential threat, already foreshadowing the spirit of the coming war years.

In 1918, the etching was included in Paul Westheim's portfolio "Die Schaffenden". For this edition, the print appeared both in a special edition on Japan paper in an edition of 25 copies and in a regular edition of 100 copies on heavy wove paper.
